Employee turnover exacerbates wait times at the Social Security Administration.

According to a CNBC article, the high levels of employee turnover are especially high at teleservice locations. The lack of employee retention makes telephone wait times the longest they have been in ten years. New employees are needing to be trained and updated on the ever changing SSI and SSDI landscape which frustrates new and frequent callers. As CNBC writes, it is not just people filing or checking on an existing application that are frustrated by the wait. Even routine tasks like updating an address or name can now take four times longer.

Wait times now take an average of thirty minutes and are frequently much longer. The low staffing shortage and high turnover is likely due to financial cuts in the Social Security Administration. A number of lawmakers have made it a priority to increase funding for the SSA.

Employee morale is low in the SSA according to a survey taken by the Federal Employment Viewpoint Survey. The Federal News Network posted an article about the survey and they found that, “when asked about their thoughts on reentry plans, 31.9% of SSA respondents disagreed or strongly disagreed that agency leaders were protecting employees’ health, safety and wellbeing.”
