Working for Cash – Bad for Your Social Security Disability Future

Many people have more than one job these days. Working for cash, or “under the table,” is often utilized as a way to make ends meet. However, this type of work can affect the amount of money that you are eligible to receive in social security disability benefits down the line. The amount of money that you are eligible for depends on how much you pay into the social security program over time. Employers who withhold taxes from your paychecks are doing this for you – in this way, you’re earning “work credits.” If some of the money that you earn is paid in cash, it isn’t credited to you and the amount that you may get.

Although working for cash may sound good in theory, it isn’t building up your reserves for the future if you become disabled.

You can check the number of work credits that you have accrued and the amount of money that you are eligible for by creating a social security account online. www.ssa.gov/signin Alternatively, you can call your local social security office for assistance.
